I’m read American Housewife by Helen Ellis. The book is collection of short stories about housewives. However, the stories are not about your typical housewives. Many of the women in the story are a “little off.” At best manical and deranged. I loved it! I was able to get this an as ARC from NetGalley.

Most of the stories center around women who have worked in the past and for some reason unknown have become housewives. Every story story is told with cynical dark humor that makes you laugh out loud at every story.

My favorite story is entitled, “Wainscoting” it about two female neighbors who basically argue over what to do with their common area in a hoity-toity condo building in New York. It is so mischievous the antics the two ladies get into. The story reminds of you the movie, War of the Roses with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. So a long war between neighbors begins, reaching levels that almost destroy the common area and maybe their lives.

Overall, the book was great and loved the black comedic short stories! Who knew housewives could be so ruthless!

I would give it a 5 out of 5.

Happy Reading!
