Summary From GoodReads

The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

My Thoughts

My first finished book of 2024. I heard about this book from one of my staff members and thought I would give it a read. I’m so grateful I did.

This book completely fascinated me! It’s profoundly thought-provoking, captivating, and mind-bending. My emotions were on a rollercoaster! I found myself more invested in the characters—their struggles, adaptation to a new normal, and the unfolding of their life stories.

Classifying this as excellent science fiction, the plot revolves around people worldwide discovering mysterious boxes at their doors revealing their lifespan. The only certainty is that the strings determining lifespan are eerily accurate. The origin of these boxes is the greatest mystery.

The sudden appearance of these boxes triggers chaotic and traumatic global changes. Those with shorter strings face discrimination, losing jobs, health insurance, and rights to proper medical treatment. Politicians exploit these vulnerabilities, transforming democratic systems into tyranny.

The author masterfully explores the boxes’ impact on regular lives, offering powerful points of view. Each character is beautifully crafted, except for the power-hungry politician Anthony. Two (or three, if you count Gertrude’s) incredible love stories unfold, culminating in a heart-wrenching twist that brought tears to my eyes.

I formed deep connections with every character, from the heroic Hank to the extraordinary bond between Nina and Maura. The letters exchanged between Amie and Ben were a delight, and the unique friendship of Jack and Javier, burdened by a significant secret, was truly compelling.

Many of the events, characters, and journeys are eerily parallel to what we face now in real life. There were so many times this book made think about our current affairs and my personal life when similarities occurred with a character or event.

This book is a poetic, heart-wrenching, meaningful masterpiece—a one-of-a-kind experience that resonated with me more than I anticipated.

I wholeheartedly, absolutely, and extremely recommend reading it, especially for book clubs!
