Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Stilwell has been “exiled” to a low-key post policing rustic Catalina Island, after department politics drove him off a homicide desk on the mainland. But while following up the usual drunk-and-disorderlies and petty thefts that come with his new territory, Detective Stilwell gets a report of a body found weighed down at the bottom of the harbor—a Jane Doe identifiable at first only by a streak of purple dye in her hair. At the same time, a report of poaching on a protected reserve turns into a case fraught with violence and danger as Stilwell digs into the shady past of an island bigwig.
I have always loved Michael Connelly books, even before Harry Bosch became a household name in crime fiction. In Nightshade, Connelly introduces a fresh perspective with a new character, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Stilwell. I really appreciate how Connelly continues to expand his universe, showing different sides of law enforcement in Los Angeles.
Detective Stilwell is gritty and grounded, a character who exudes integrity despite the challenges he faces. Right from the beginning, it’s clear that being stationed on Catalina Island is a form of exile. Stilwell has been sent there as a consequence of problems within the LA County department, which adds an interesting layer to his character and the story.
On Catalina Island, Stilwell quickly finds that life is far from peaceful. While adjusting to his new assignment, he becomes embroiled in an investigation that uncovers hidden crimes and dangerous secrets connected to both the island and Los Angeles. Stilwell must rely on his grit, intelligence, and integrity to navigate a case filled with deception, corruption, and unexpected twists that challenge him both personally and professionally.
I found myself drawn into the narrative from start to finish. Connelly’s writing keeps the tension tight while allowing the characters to feel real and relatable. Detective Stilwell is a compelling addition to the Connelly universe, and I am excited to see where his story goes in future books.
I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley, and it did not disappoint. Fans of Connelly, especially those looking for new perspectives beyond Harry Bosch, will find Nightshade engaging and satisfying.
