Juneteenth Reading List: Stories of Freedom, Resistance, and Black Joy

Happy Juneteenth!!!!

Juneteenth is a day of remembrance and celebration. It marks the end of slavery in the United States, specifically June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally told they were free—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It’s a time to reflect, learn, and uplift Black voices. And for me, one of the best ways to do that is through books.

Whether you’re new to Juneteenth or looking to deepen your understanding, here are a few powerful reads that center Black history, liberation, and joy.

Books to Read for Juneteenth:

The Water Dance Book Cover

A beautifully written story that blends historical fiction with magical realism. It follows Hiram, a young man born into slavery with a mysterious power tied to memory and water. The writing is rich, and the message hits hard.

Libertie Book Cover

Loosely inspired by the first Black female doctor in the U.S., this coming-of-age novel follows a free-born Black girl in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn trying to find her own path beyond what’s expected of her.

On Juneteenth Book Cover

A perfect primer on Juneteenth by a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian. She blends personal stories with historical insight to explore what the holiday means—and what freedom has looked like in practice.

Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery Book Cover

This powerful photography book documents the visual history of emancipation through rare archival images of Black Americans. It’s both educational and deeply moving—showing how Black people envisioned freedom for themselves before, during, and after slavery’s formal end. A must-read (and must-see) for understanding Juneteenth through imagery and lived experience.

Whether you’re attending a local event, spending time with loved ones, or just taking a quiet moment to read and reflect—Juneteenth is about honoring the past and making space for Black futures.
