Martin Grey, a smart, talented black lawyer working out of a storefront in Queens, becomes friendly with a group of some of the most powerful, wealthy, and esteemed black men in America. He’s dazzled by what they’ve accomplished, and they seem to think he has the potential to be as successful as they are. They invite him for a weekend away from it all—no wives, no cell phones, no talk of business. But far from home and cut off from everyone he loves, he discovers a disturbing secret that challenges some of his deepest convictions
Forty Acres by Dwayne Alexander Smith is a gripping thriller with a bold and unsettling premise. It follows Martin Grey, a Black attorney who is invited into an elite circle of successful Black men. At first, it seems like an amazing opportunity, but he soon discovers their shocking secret—they run a modern-day plantation where white people are enslaved.
The book has 95 chapters that go by quickly, and the pacing is great. Anna, Martin’s wife, is the real MVP of the story. She was already skeptical of the men but couldn’t exactly put her finger on what was off. There were many moments where I found myself holding my breath because of how intense the scenes were. And I won’t lie—I was super happy when Carter got what he deserved (slight spoiler). Personally, I don’t like when the oppressed become the oppressor, so that aspect of the story left me with mixed feelings.
Overall, the book is fast-paced with unexpected twists and raises deep questions about power, justice, and revenge. It challenges you to think about history and how far people will go for control. Definitely a thought-provoking read that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
