Black Blogger Book Tag

I’ve seen this Black Blogger Book Tag floating around. I wanted to hop on the trend…which originally starts as a Black Booktuber tag, created by Blkandsapphicreads. Instead, I will be answering these questions on my blog.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

  • Hi, my name is Kaya, pronounced Ky-yah, people really struggle. I’ve been blogging for more than 10 years now. Unfortunately, I’m very inconsistent with it and hoping to get better. I do enjoy having my book blog and talking about the books I enjoy. I also enjoy watching TV and movies. Overall, I love being creative making things in various art forms. Right now, I’m into plants and trying to keep the plants I bought over the pandemic alive.

Who’s a black author you love that a lot of people don’t know about?

I think people are very familiar with any author I suggest. But, an author that comes to mind is Delores Phillips. I really loved her book, The Darkest ChildThe Darkest Child Book Cover

Favorite book about the black experience?

  • Most of the books I read are about the Black experience, but my favorite recently is The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson. It entails the hardships of choices that two extraordinary women have make under extreme conditions. Also, it showcase the ill-treatment of Black women with teen pregnancies back in the 1960s. That’s something I hadn’t read about.

Favorite book by a black author?

  • A comfort book for me is anything written by Carl Weber. I love the Family Business series so much. I think it’s because I think I’m a gangsta in my head.

Recommend a Black + queer book

  • Many of the books I’ve read have queer characters but not as the main character. So an opportunity for me to read a book with queer main character. I saw, My Dear Henry: A Jekyll & Hyde Remix by Kalynn Bayron. I had a stint where all I read for a time in my life was classic literature. I have been seeing these remixes so I would like to give this book a try.

Recommend a book with a Black person on the cover.

  • Rust in the Root by Justina Ireland. Justina Ireland has been a favorite author since Dread Nation. Rust in the Root is captivating historical fantasy that delves into the intertwining realms of race and power in America.

Recommend a book by a Black author that makes you happy

  • Issa Rae makes me happy. I love her book memoir, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae. I feel Issa and I are akin. She made being awkward and introverted okay. I felt understood and seen with her book and the tv production work she has done with Insecure, Rap Sh$t, and everything in between.

Talk about a book by a Black author that’s coming in 2024

  • More Than This by Krystal Marquis. More Than This will be the second book in The Davenports series. It is supposed to come out sometime in 2024. I’m very excited. The Davenports explores the upper class, high society of Black folk in Chicago during the early 1900s. This is a Black experience that is rarely written about in fiction or non-fiction. I’m loving this and want more.
