But instead, he’s reeling from a summer of discovery, loss and betrayal, and still uncovering the truth about his powers and his legacy as the descendant of a powerful magical lineage. The family he only just discovered is already fractured beyond repair, and the mother he thought he knew—and risked everything to find—might be the biggest danger to the new life he’s building. Malik is trying to find his footing in a world threatened by intertribal tension and the rising power of the Bokors. But how he can he use his power to protect a world he’s not sure he’ll ever fully belong to…
I just finished reading Bones at the Crossroads by LaDarrion Williams and I have to say it was an action-packed ride from start to finish. This is the second book in the series and we are back with Malik for his fall semester at the magical HBCU, Cayman University. As a reader, you really feel immersed in black college culture, from the sororities and fraternities to how much homecoming means on campus.
Malik is juggling regular campus life while on a mission to find his malevolent mother, who is leaving chaos in her wake. The mix of voodoo culture and Haitian and African influences added a rich layer to the story. At times it felt a little overwhelming, but it was definitely fascinating to explore. The action scenes were my favorite part, they were so vivid that I could picture every moment in my mind.
The book also introduced a lot of exciting new characters, which I loved. My only disappointment was with the answer to one particular question. Everyone knew it, but it would have been fun to see a different possibility explored.
I am really excited to see where this series goes next. The possibilities feel endless. I also hope this series gets turned into a TV show or movie because it would be amazing on screen. For my next blog post, I plan to do my dream casting for a movie adaptation.
